Farewell UPS

I started July 17th 2007 at UPS. For the first six months, I was a consultant just trying to work my way up to get hired after six months. On the sixth month, I got hired and even got a higher position. I was estatic at the time since it was a huge pay raise for me. The pay raise resulted in many good things happening including getting my own apartment and being able to afford my trip. Then in August 2008 it hit me that I wanted more out of life so I began my budget hungry ways saving for the ultimate life experience backpacking the world. Now I’m down to my last two days working at UPS. I remember saying to myself a few months ago how I still have to wait so long but now it seems like it came up so fast.

  • I’ll always remember the Ultimate Frisbee days. Every week (Usually Wednesdays or Thursdays) after work. Intense work out with plenty of injuries. I looked forward to every game.
  • Golds Gym in Paramus. It was a ritual every lunch period for one hour to work out. The peanut butter buster protein shakes were out of this world. I had never been healthier in my life.
  • Before I had joined Golds Gym, bunch of us would go out to lunch to new exciting places. The foods we ate and the people we met during lunch made the experience unforgetable.
  • The people. That is the number one thing I will never forget. Some are long time time friends now and others I may never see again but one thing is for sure, it was great meeting every single person here.

Thank You
Zeenat: Wouldn’t have made it this far if it wasn’t for your training. I need to come down to ATL and visit! Our talks always made my day.
Judah: It was never the same here since they let you go. I’m glad we continued to be good friends.
Justin: You gave me tons of inspiration when I first decided this trip. And awesome motivation at the gym.
Kota: Our lunches and breaks were epic. You introduced me to so many people here.
Steve: You introduced me to the apartment complex. I got a great deal out of that thanks to you. Don’t let the PLD’s kill you man!
Jeff: Been awhile and you were only here for a short period of time but damn it was fun!
Alyssa: Although we don’t talk much anymore, my first month or two here was awesome because of you. It was basically at least a 5 hour day of Microsoft Communicator with just you. We had great convos.
My entire group: Gerri, Bob, Hiram, Debbie, Fran, Aneesah, Janet, Kevin, Aileen, Dennis, and Gail.
Other groups: Guy, Nathan, Theresa, and Niket.
And to everyone else who I may have forgotten. You all made this experience working here very interesting and entertaining.

I’ll never forget any of you :)
PS: The work itself I’ll easily forget though lol

Music Is What Feelings Sound Like

Music Is What Feelings Sound Like
On 4/10/09 it was Danny Tenaglia’s Vinyl Reunion at Pacha. It was absolutely amazing. The night started having to get into NYC. Kota drove Katie and I into the city and for whatever reason, Kota decided to go home who was apparently too tired to party!. As we stumbled with our “Gatorade bottle” (were in a recession remember?) toward Pacha, we met up with Teresa. We decided to wait for the rest of the gang to show up as well before we went in. Just chatting away somehow we randomly got into a conversation with someone else waiting for his friends as well. He was from California just visiting NYC who was originally from Afghanistan. His first impression of New York people was the snobby don’t talk to me don’t touch me attitude but we quickly proved that theory wrong. We must have been outside for a solid 30 minutes talking about nothing special and laughing the entire time. Eventually everyone showed up and we all went in including our new friend (I forget his name). A few more of my friends from Nightlife Vibe show up and the night just takes off perfectly. Somehow in the crowd we lost our new friend and we never saw him again :( . DT just ripped the place apart from the minute we got in till the end. Only the strong survive and were left with Argenis, Teresa, and I 10 hours later. After confusing the wrong Days Inn hotel we had a BRG for, we decided to crash at Argenis’s place with some tunes and Xbox. I couldn’t stay awake any longer falling asleep in every possible place I could sit down so we headed out to the correct Days Inn hotel and crashed. A night that will never be forgotten.

2 Week Notice And The Amazing Response
I’ve learned so much about myself and what I’m capible of doing by working at UPS. I’ll be forever grateful for what I had because if it wasn’t for UPS, my travel dreams may not have worked out as perfectly as it has. 4/15/09 was the date I told my supervisor Bob about leaving to presute a life of backpacking around the world. Everyone that I told was speechless. I received an overwhelming amount of praises and good lucks on my journey. I suppose I expected confusion about what I’m doing but everyone seemed so understanding. Thank you again!

Broadway Dance Center
House dancing has a style that’s simply amazing. I’ve taken two house dance lessons and one hiphop. I learned quite a bit from only three lessons. What a workout too! The lessons were fantastic and the people are very friendly. I always arrived early to just watch the other lessons. Amazing talented dancers. I highly recommend Broadway Dance Center to anyone taking any sort of dance lessons.

Old Best Friend Visits Me!
It’s been 7 years since I last saw Ashley. She recently got a new job as a Flight Attendant and gets free flights wherever she wants so she decided to come to New Jersey! Standing in Newark Airport waiting for her gave me the chills about my trip. As I’m standing  there I even got like a cold sweat because I started getting nervous. Not really sure what I was nervous about but I was just so excited to finally see her again after all this time.

After I picked her up, the day starts by finding a place to eat. Since we were in Newark I figured we might as well go to NYC. Ashley isn’t use to the crazyness of the city which nearly resulted in her having a heart attack from the traffic and crazy people lol. Our first mission was to find a place to eat. That turned out to be a lot harder then I thought! We really wanted hotdogs so Grays Papaya would be the perfect fit for this however finding a parking spot near 37th and 8th was a nightmare. Ended up just parking in a garage near Grays and walked around randomly. We are to meet up with Teresa, Argenis, and James now. James excuse was he was too broke so he never ended up coming into the city. It would have been too much if we drove back to jersey then to nyc again (Sorry man!). We picked up Teresa and now were at Argenis’s place and it was time to pre-game! Caption Morgan + Dr Pepper!

Time to dance and Sullivan Room it was. It was Ashley’s first time on a subway and she got so excited about it lol. At Sullivan Room, Becka and Ara were playing some awesome tracks. It was great seeing Becka again. She’s so nice and is so supportive of my trip. We danced for hours till close to 5am. Ashley was making tons of friends lol. In the state we were in, there was no way we could handle a subway again. The cab was pretty eventful. Back at Argenis’s place, we crashed not too long after we got there. (Thanks again Argenis for letting us crash there!)

All of us woke up with a pretty shitty headache as punishment for what we did the day before. Ashley was only able to stay for one night since she had work the next day. I  really didn’t want to say good bye again. It was 7 years since I last saw her and yet we still talked often online. I’m glad she came and really hope it’s not another 7 years before we see each other again. Miss you already Ashley!

Come to my going away party!

Less is More

Moved Out

Well Teresa and I moved out of my apartment from the Grand Imperial in Hackensack. I had more then enough to be able to afford it however I wanted to save more money for my trip coming up. In the process of moving out, I had thrown away or sold nearly everything I’ve owned. I’m down to a suite case and backpack. Eventually I’ll only be down to a backpack however my job requires me to wear business casual (ssucckkss) so that was extra clothes. Where am I now? Just across the street! From an ad on Craigslist, I found a one bedroom for more then half the rent I was paying before and that doesn’t even include all the utilities I use to have to pay. It’s a top floor pent house condo. There’s beautiful view of NYC out of my bedroom window. The family I’m staying with is making me feel at home pretty quickly. They have a 5 year old son which is just like taking care of Cristian all over again. As soon as I get home, “Hey Mike! Want to play Wii?” lol. Extremely nice and I’m grateful of what I have here.

Slick Deals on Hotel Rooms

With enough research and patience, you can get things for free. Between Teresa and me, we were able to get 7 free hotel rooms in local NJ area, NYC, Atlantic City, and Washington DC. It’s just about every single weekend till I leave in May for $0. It’s an amazing deal and I wish we did this sooner. I listed out all the free rooms on my calendar on the right.

Side Trips

Well I have two trips coming up before I leave. First one is Washington DC from April 3rd till April 6th. Thanks to Teresa that did all the research for this though. Next we have Atlantic City for April 18th. Since we have a free room, might as well just go. Pretty excited for both of these!

Business

Traffic on Art of Backpacking is picking up rapidly. Because of this, I had to purchase a new host. The cost was $100 for a full year. The only issue I had with this is that it’s a shared host and not dedicated. I guess once we become too large for the host itself, it’ll require an upgrade but we have a long way to go for that. So far djskylab.com is moved over to Bluehost. I’ll move AOB over to Bluehost as soon as I backup everything. During all of this, GoDaddy.com had a deal for a new domain that cost $1 for a year. I couldn’t say no so I registered nightlifevibe.com. Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent an unhealthy amount of time creating the website. I decided to use Joomla for it’s CMS but now I think I regret it and should have gone with Wordpress MU. It’s a bit late now since the community grew. I’m in partnership with Eddie G which is helping out quite a bit with the community itself. The forums are pretty entertaining. As for DJSkylab.com, new widgets were added and plenty more updates will be on the way especially now since I got more power with Bluehost.

NOTE: For my Facebook friends reading this, this is coming out of my blog from djskylab.com and is automatically feeded to facebook notes.

Snowboarding

CIMG2622

To all the snowboarders out there, I don’t know how you do it! Snowboarding requires some amazing skills. I went to Mountain Creek in Vernon, NJ for my last time fix of Snowboarding. Didn’t really know what to expect besides being told I will fall down endlessly. The day started out waking up very early (earlier then going to work!) and taking the bus there. First we had to go to NYC then take another bus to head to Mountain Creek. $20 round trip ride is not too bad. Weather was in the 40’s (Fahrenheit) so it wasn’t too cold.

I’ve been to Mountain Creek before during the summer. The park converts from a Ski resort to a Water Park somehow. Everything gets rebuilt each season. It was clear though that the Ski resort is the main attraction for this area. We decided to purchase the “All-Inclusive” package which included rentals, lessons, and ski lift tickets for $90. I really wanted to get the proper form of snowboarding since this will not be my first time snowboarding so I decided to get the lessons. The lessons weren’t too bad. I got what I needed out of it to improve. Snowboarding seems to be a self-taught sport so I don’t think I’ll need anymore lessons anytime soon. Breaking was the most difficult task for me and the only way I knew how to stop was falling down on purpose. Teresa had a hard time getting both her legs ON the snowboard LOL! It’s alright, you’ll get the hang of it!

We continued to snowboard in the beginner area but it started to get crowded. Time to “level up” to the next section! The next area we went to was called Sugar Hill. I’m sure to the experts this hill was nothing but a piece of cake however to us it looked like it was a nice way to break a few bones. Starting out in the very bottom part of the hill, I started getting the hang of it and worked my way up higher and higher each time. Of course by now I’ve fallen hundreds of times in every single direction. Becoming numb from the pain, nothing was going to stop me from getting better. Eventually I got so high that I could feel the breeze rushing through my face from the speed I was going. Incredible rush. I wanted more though so I decided to go all the way up on top of the hill. For the first time in my life, I took a ski lift. I’ll admit, I was nervous going up especially since you had to snowboard OUT of the lift (That turned into me FALLING out of the lift). Once I got to the top, I had an amazing view of the nearby mountains and looking down of the nearby Snowboarders falling down which I was soon to join in on. I sit down to just relax and clear my head for the amount of injuries I will have at the end of this. I buckle up my board to my feet and prepare to go down. I stay confident and go down. I lasted a few seconds before I fell on my ass. Get up and repeat. I knew I was getting better because I could feel myself going faster. After a dozen more falls, slides head first, and snow rushing onto my face – I’ve made it down. Done for the day.

We wanted to go snow tubing next but it required reservation and the day was full. Since we already returned our rentals and had time to kill before the bus came, we went to the bar they had at the resort. Today couldn’t have been any better. All the bruises and soreness was definitely worth it. Teresa and I spent a wonderful Valentines Day together doing something different. This day was certainly inspirational to keep trying new things.
