How to bring a dog into Argentina illegally

We’ve only done one day in Colonia and already done nearly everything Colonia has to offer. It’s a small place but I like that. It’s simple and feels good to be away from the big city.

We drove to the old Colonia gate. Pretty cool. Not really sure what to say about it. It’s old and used a long time ago, there you go. More picture opportunities of course. Then walked down the famous old styled street D-Los Suspiros and also into a gallery. Ended up at the lighthouse next and decided to go up to the top. Gave us a nice overview look of the entire town.

Colonia is nice with not much to worry about. The people are friendly, food is tasty, musical streets, and just the ease of mind Colonia gives you. Does give me the urge to want to see more of Uruguay.

So were on our way back to the boat to head to Buenos Aires. While walking and about a block away before were at the entrance of customs and the parking lot, there’s a dog. (I think it was a she) and she’s a small little dog just running around aimlessly. We started talking about the dog and how she probably wants to leave Uruguay and get on the boat to Argentina. We gave the dog lots of attention on our walk and then Lizzie did the deal breaker, she pet him. From then on the dog followed us as if we owned her. We passed by the first set of security and the dog comes right in with us. Now were on the line for customs and we were for certain that customs would say something. Nope. We passed by customs and the dog continued to follow us and no one noticed. This is hysterical at this point and not sure what were going to do with a dog once we get to Argentina. While waiting on another line to get into the boat, we pass by TWO more security check points with them not noticing. She somehow knew exactly what to do to sneak around and even sat next to us during the waiting times. There was a point when we had thought we had lost her but in fact she was just looking for a way around the crowd into the door to continue to follow us which she did. Lizzie had to go the restroom so the dog waited outside the door for her to come out. When Lizzie came out, the dog jumped in excitement and continued to follow. Now were on the bridge and officially getting in the boat. The dog successfully enters the boat however unfortunately a security person notices. Security calls for backup and a lady comes towards the dog. The dog senses bad news and starts running away from her and even growls and barks. We felt horrible. Security had a hard time following the dog and getting her out but eventually did. I couldn’t stop thinking about that dog the whole boat ride over. She was clever enough to work her way around everyone. I do think dogs have a good sense of a good owner and who would take care of them well. She even knew when she was being taken away. Hope you’re doing ok there doggy!

Thanks Lizzie for inviting to come along! Good times!

Woke up early to catch our boat ride called Buquebus to Colonia, Uruguay. Lizzie had already booked the room at the hostel in Colonia. Were just going for one night to just check it out. Boat wasn’t that expensive. We choose the 3 hour journey compared to the one hour since it was cheaper and heck I love boat rides. The boat was fancy. You walk into a common area with tables and chairs to hang out, there was a small arcade, a shopping store that had tons of souvenirs, food area, normal seating area, and an area for the first class. Two floors inside and a roof top. Breezy calming ride. Looking into the water brought back memories of my small boat rides in Thailand. I miss that. I love open water and just looking into it seeing how far you can see.

Again just like when I was in Misiones, there’s a scent of cleanness in the air. Hostel was easy to find and we just walked there. Colonia is quite small so the entire town is walk-able. We pass by a few people riding motorbikes and small tiny cars like a buggy. Everyone is renting them and riding around town with it. As many of you know, I love renting out motorbikes and exploring the area. As soon as we check in, we went for a walk to rent one out and get some food.

We got the motorbike and were given a map of the area. But before we could do that, we had to make sure we got Lizzie a Sprite. Day can’t move on without that. Then we decided to take a ride down the shore line. I love the feeling of unexpectedness. I figured there would be a beach but not to this extent. Again reminded of Thailand driving along the shore line near a beautiful beach. The weather couldn’t have been any better. It wasn’t cold nor hot but the UV was strong enough to give me a nice burn. Along the drive we stopped at random beaches for some pictures including taking pictures of each other taking pictures. At the end of the road there was a restaurant we decided to stop and eat at. Fantastic window view near the sand and water. The restaurant wasn’t crazy and had an old fashion look to it. Lizzie ordered an omelet with fries. I ordered a Chivito. I’m told Chivito’s are a favorite in Uruguay but I can’t see how this hasn’t given anyone a heart attack yet. It’s double stacked hamburger, eggs, ham, mayo, and some veggies. A serious mouth full. Luckily I was hungry enough to eat the entire thing.

With no destination (is there ever?), we drive back and just explore the area. I’m having way too much fun with this motorbike. Lizzie being – will Lizzie, there is always room for ice-cream. We stop by an ice-cream place we’ve spotted earlier and hang out by the park across the street. Second stomach for ice-cream they say. We continue our drive to nowhere and started making random turns whatever looked interesting. Ended up on a highway that led us outside Colonia and outside the map given to us. Roads seemed newly paved but we’d only pass by another car every 10 minutes so it was mostly a silent road that just went straight on. Around us is endless fields of plain fields, crops, and trees for as far as your eyes can see. I’m trying to find an entrance into the crop fields to just run into like they do in the movies but all the fields had a fence. That would have made for a good picture. We made up for it when coming to another grass field that was empty and able to get into. Took some distance shots. Part of my nature is to be an idiot therefore I had been running toward Lizzie while she took picture’s of me running towards her. There was a split second when I had jumped up retardedly and she just so happen to take a picture of me doing that. Nice timing Lizzie! Found some more open fields where we relaxed and took in the environment. We even found another beach along the way.

It’s getting dark out and we decided to start heading back. Parked the bike back at the hostel and explored Colonia at night. Night time is chilled out and many restaurants setup their tables outside on the cobble stone streets. Streets are dimly lit up with old styled street lamps. The waterfront at night had an awesome aura to it. From where were standing, you have the whole river view then below are rocks that then lead to the water further down. On the rocks there was a group of kids with one playing the guitar and the others singing. Perfect breeze, warm, the sound of ocean water, and hearing the music they were playing; bliss. I eventually jumped down into the rock area and sat there for awhile looking the water. Lizzie was too much of a baby to come down lol.

Wish I could have kept going down that road on the motorbike.
