Why are you called Skylab? Are you really a DJ?

My parents owned a nightclub called Skylab in Lodi, New Jersey, USA. The year was 1996 and I was 11 years old. Unfortunately the club only lasted one year. During that year though, I was always in my favorite area, the DJ booth. During the day time while it was closed to the public, I was playing around with the DJ decks and that’s when I started listening closer the music. After the club closed, I took the name as a nickname for myself to use throughout the internet. I continue to DJ to this day whenever I’m given the opportunity. Though I play many genres, House Music is where my love is.

What are you doing?

Enjoying what life has to offer by traveling the world, for life.

What does this mean “Traveling the world with it’s music”?

Paying attention to sights and sounds is a required element of travel. Music is essentially all around us. From the car horns of NYC, waterfalls of Iguazu, and busy haggling of Beijing. It creates the atmosphere around us. Then there’s the music rhythm itself. Music has always created a sense of happiness and unity through all the genre’s of the world. It’s the one thing we all as humans have in common, the passion of listening. It takes total control of our movements and directions in ways we can’t control but to let ourselves go and dance.

What were you doing before you left?

I attended two years of University/College. Because of my low-income and the high costs of American schools, I was forced to worked. This led me to a working pattern for many years to follow and never officially finishing school. My last job was high paying job with a lot of room to continue moving up the ladder. I became aware that no matter how high up the ladder I was, it was never enough. The more money I earned, it seemed the more I had to spend on bills. I was looking for an escape and found a whole community of people leaving the life I was currently living at the time. Once I realized this was not the life I wanted, I went ahead and decided I wanted to travel. Sold everything, paid off debt, and saved for a journey that will last a lifetime. After many months of planning and saving, I finally took off on May 12th, 2009 to Beijing, China.

How much did you save before you left in May 2009?

About $12,000 USD.

How much do you spend?

Not much! On average with most countries about $1,000USD per month. Sometimes a lot less depending on the country but it evens out when going to more expensive countries.  That’s about $25 a day.

How are you spending so little?

I travel cheap. For example, bottled water instead of coke. I don’t stay in hotels and instead stay at Hostels, Guesthouses, and the very kind people throughout the world that have let me stay in their place at no costs. No taxi’s and mostly public transportation or walking, what’s the rush? In countries like Australia, I always cooked. Finding every possible bargain in all transportation, food, activities, etc. It does take some work but it all becomes natural where the better deal is.

You have other projects?

I run two websites. Art of Backpacking and Nightlife Vibe
